More modern muzzleloaders approach the accuracy and range of a modern center fire rifle but don't allow for a second quick shot in the event an animal is not dropped by the first shot. A muzzleloader is a firearm that is loaded only through the muzzle (the open end of the barrel). Muzzleloaders use special powder to fire, and require special handling.

Basics Of Muzzleloading

Muzzleloaders have come a long way since the days of Davy Crockett. They are easier to learn and to shoot than they ever have been. This is getting a lot of new people into muzzleloading. Chad Schearer from CVA Muzzleloaders and the TV show, Shoot Straight With Chad Schearer, recently joined’s Chris Larsen to discuss getting started with muzzleloaders.

Schearer says people are hunting with muzzleloaders for a multitude of reasons, most notably, more hunting opportunity. “It allows you to spend more days in the field, that is a major bonus.


This month thousands of hunters will be hitting the woods with their muzzleloaders in anticipation of a smoky puff and a dead deer dropping when the cloud clears. It’s a great time of year to be in the woods and it’s even more special when using a fine black powder firearm. The unique challenge and tradition involved with black powder or similar propellants makes this hunt especially exciting for many of us this time of year.
